37 arrests made in one week for drug related cases

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has said that 37 people taken into custody over 77 different cases of illegal drugs.
This was revealed at a press conference held yesterday by the MPS Drug Enforcement Unit to brief the press on drug related cases.
MPS said that between the period of 14 – 20 November, they received 77 drug related cases and from the 37 people arrested in relation to these cases, two were expatriates.
Inspector from Unit Ahmed Azhan said that the Drug Enforcement received very effective cooperation from the public in enabling them to make these arrests. Azhan also noted that they received several reports of drug abuse from the public. He added that members of the public who give information on such cases will be given full protection from MPS and encouraged people to come forward with similar reports.
From the illegal drugs seized in the operations related to these cases include, 7 bullets, 121 packets or illegal drugs as well as 21 cellophane pieces containing substances suspected of cannabis.
17 cases from the above mentioned 77, has now been sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
