We will overthrow the government within three months – Opposition Alliance

Monday, October 5th, 2009

ihuthijaj400ehvun2DRP/PA/IDP opposition alliance has said that they intend to overthrow MDP ruled government within three months time. This was disclosed by the alliance at a protest held at artificial beach last night.

In the protest, almost all the opposition political leaders who spoke said that they will over throw MDP government. They also criticized various government policies.

Speaking to the party supporters, Maaz Ahmed Saleem, DRP activist, said, “We can overthrow this government within three months if you people are behind us, as you are right now. Before MDP came to power, they assured various international bodies that they will build 3 temples within 18 months of coming to power. We have received information that one of these temples is going to be built in Male’. The second assurance given by MDP was to make alcohol readily available to people.”

Speakers went on to say that it would be dangerous to establish ties with Israel. They also criticized the decision to reduce the number of civil service employees and the salary of employees as well. Opposition leaders repeatedly called for the resignation of President Nasheed.
In the protest, placards and banners were put up by the supporters of Opposition Alliance expressing their discontentment of President Nasheed’s government. “Reduce political posts”, “We will not give you an opportunity to eat turkey”, “Don’t hike up price of staples” etc, were some of the sentiments expressed in the placards and banners.
The protest had to be discontinued within an hour due to some technical problems with the sound system.

  1. The tipping point for our young democracy has arrived. Our hand has been forced by the opposition calling to topple this government. Choices have to be made. And they have to be made now. As Dr Shaheed said so eloquently, this is a government chosen by the people of this country through a democratic process. Are we going to support this government or are we going to kill it off?
We cannot afford any more to sit on the fence and debate in our kitchens. We have to make a stand for our future, our children’s future and for the sacrifices made by our activists who brought us the change we wanted.
We cannot afford to underestimate the power of human greed and evil. We have to get real with what we are up against. The DRPPA was formed not to defend the rights of our people and the morality of our country but to defend the billion dollar business interests of the leaders and supporters of the former government. And they will do whatever they can to do that. Let us get clear on that.
The DRPPA came into parliament riding on the culture of poverty, corruption fear and destitution created by the former regime to ensure the support of the voters. The MDP was weakened during the election by these same elements both within and without the party. There were many who came in to MDP to fragment the party. Over and over we have seen these elements bring division into MDP. The intention is and has always been to disempower the government, to fragment the MDP, weaken the democratic process and to bring discord into the hearts of our people.
However, this has not happened. The government is going from strength to strength, the membership of the MFDP is expanding every day and trust is building up with our people that this is indeed an Oagaatheri sarukaareh (a government that cares).
I believe we have moved into a critical phase of our political process. The time has come for us to shift whatever it is that hold us back from participating in the consolidation of democracy and liberty in our nation. And step boldly into our new future. We have to heal ourselves , we have to out the past in the past and we have to create our future based on what is possible and what we say we can.
We have to make a stand never ever to give power back to the people who took power away from us and made us the beggars we used to be. Begging for medical assistance, begging for support for our special needs children, begging for a loan to build our house, begging for an opening to start a business, begging for a roof over our heads, begging to have a job, doing what they asked us to do and keeping our mouths shut in case we did not get that promotion we wanted. We begged for everything.
This is what we will have if this government fragments. The International Community has rallied around our new President to support our country as we take our first steps in democracy . The DRPPA never supported democracy, they supported absolute rule, and still do. You can see that in the ridiculous clause to protect the former president from prosecution they are asking for in the bill for the benefits and priviledges of the former President.
I believe we have seen enough this year to make the choices we now need to make. We cannot become another Burma.

  3. I can see Khadeeja brain-washed by Anni and his past socially unacceptable behaviors. In fact Anni is not matured to be a president and 87% of the population still believe so. Are we in better status now? Can we get lonas? Can any one get jobs if he does not belong to MDP? Ours sons were studying free earlier, now we have to pay for education? Health sector is collapsed once this government is in. We dont even know where to go for begging since we still have to to beg for medical assistance. Earlier at least there was Theemuge. Anni’s family members, friends and party folks are all paid employees by the state funds. This is the same game some people played in former government and Anni is repeating it in the name of democracy. This is hypocracy not democarcy. Change was brought in the name of good governance. Is this good governance? I think peop-le like Kahdeeja and Anni should atttend a democarcy class and learn what is democracy!! Also be aware that smart people in this country cannot be fooled by Anni. We will bring him down sooner rather than later.

  4. I am MDP member and voted for anni but i am very disappointed now.I support Ali Rasheed’s thoughts here. I recall a very good phrase which represents Democracy – “of the people” “by the people” “for the people” .

    “Is he of the people”

He have threatened the public many times openly. In one occation he was seen in the tv saying that he will never do what the opposition party member of parliament says if they are elected. Is he above democratic principles????

    “Is he for the people”

He reduced the salary of civil service employees by Mrf 35 million per month, already annouced plans to increase price of electricity, water & Education.

” Is he by the people”

He started diplomatic relations with israel against the openion of 90% of the maldivian population.

Rather its better do accept being a dictator . So we will never expect anything better than the previous 30 years. A leader who is not ready to listen to majority of the population on core issues like on Middle East can not say he overcame a distatorship with good faith to bring a true democracy to the Maldives.

    Regards

    Ahmed

  5. Dear Ali Rasheed

You certainly sound very disillusioned with our Presdient. The good news, Ali Rasheed, is that you do now have the opportunity to vote Anni out in the free and fair elections that was made possible by Anni’s stand and efforts to bring democracy to our country. This, Ali Rasheed is historical fact not spin.

  6. FOr god sake Khadheeja, do not make miadhu news your propagenda machine.

I personally suppported Anni and voted for him. You tell me how many promises had he made to us and forgot about it. The recession didint come yesterday. it started on 2006. As the leader of a party when he campaigned he would know the reality, would have done the research. DOnt tell me maumoon had hid it for him. Every year has the finacial report and all the details for the finances of country are released as budget reports. Why cant Anni ask one of his then MPS to check it out for him, if someone tried to hide it. if maumoon had hid the gov budget then why did MDP not protest.

Then why did he made all these promises while he cant stand it to the people. why did he shouted at maumoon saying too many politicians. see today, who has more politicians. Please go to maldives info site and do the MATH. Even check how many failed to be MDP MPS of this year were given so many higher post while civil service is being forced to go home and for paycuts.

I believed he would bring a good change. but so far he is not what he preached. (look at TVM) what happened to the TWO year term he promised. what happened to respect and protecting our religion. you can see his politicians religiousness when u check dhivehi observer.

  7. Many believe that through gangsterism and corruption, the old regime still effectively rules the Maldives anyway. The gangs are often considered the shadows of many of the elite. They are said to be extensions of the will to power of some politicians and business men from the opposition.

To understand what convinces the gangsters to do anything for power, including harming the innocent and serving the corrupt elite, one must understand the social conditions which render an individual soulless. Injustice, repression, continual betrayal and emotional starvation caused by overcrowding, greed, the decay of traditional values, these create violent ‘normlessness.’ Nietzchean like ‘amorality’ rules the day. Durkheimian anomie is fused with the 32 years of pain created by the absolute power of a corrupt dictatorship. It has left, in many, emptiness, an endless darkness. Where there once was a soul, there is an eternal vacuum. This unquenchable hunger grows the more it is fed, and it feeds…- on fear – the fear of the people. It is a furious force of lust for domination.

Sure, this new anti-social legislation may lead us to see a few token arrests. ‘Wannabe’ ‘gang-stars’ and a few weak, unintimidating fools might get into trouble for being “intimidating.” The real criminals, the ones who are actually capable of violence, will not fear the police. They will continue to roam the streets all hours of the day and night because in the court room, the corrupt judiciary will prevent them from being prosecuted.

The truly dangerous know that they are above the law. They will not fear the police, until the judiciary and the police force is much less corrupt.

The power to end the violence of gangsterism lies in the people; we must rise up and demand an end to the corrupt judiciary, and the destruction of the elite who control the gangsters.

The ‘dark forces’ are attempting to convince the people that President Nasheed’s Government is worth overthrowing because of ‘ties with Israel,’ ‘extremism,’ and the threat of a reduction in the salary of the civil servants.

If, dear civil servants, you want to ensure that you do not experience a wage reduction, push the old regime to return the billions which it so brutally robbed from the Maldives, from you!
The old regime, through corruption, through luxurious lifestyles, through Theemuge’, have stolen so much wealth from the Maldives that the new President has been rendered incapable of meeting your needs. No-one can meet your needs unless the plundered wealth is returned.

The MDP are trying to get that plundered wealth back, but we must all support them to do so.

Do you think President Nasheed wants wages to be reduced and people to suffer! NO WAY! He is living in Muleeage’ rather than in Theemuge’, refusing certain overseas trips and luxuries, so that there can be support for the disabled and for single mothers. He would, as would most in the MDP, sacrifice everything to make sure you live better off. But we foolishly sometimes do not respect these sacrifices, and look at Anni’s un-Be’fulhu like simplicity as a sign of weakness. In fact, Anni’s beautiful, powerful; no nonsense simplicity is the strength of charity – a sacrifice for YOU! We are cursed if we cannot appreciate it!

I feel that Anni has made a mistake in giving too much power to the Adhaalath. He genuinely, but perhaps wrongly, thought that by hugging Adhaalath, he could restrain their arms from unleashing punches of terror.

On Maldives/Israel relations, how is the Maldives going to convince Israel to give justice to Palestine if the Maldives does not even talk to Israel? Palestine and Maldives are more hurt by not talking to Israel than by talking to them!

So, if you want the darkness, the gangsterism, the threat of poverty and overcrowding to end, rise up against the opposition as a mass, IF THEY ATTEMPT TO TOPPLE THE GOVERNMENT!

In the meantime, push for justice regardless, for a return of that which was stolen from you.

If the old regime takes back power through means other than the electorate, they will have revealed to the world that they are not democratic, or liberal. They will not be restrained in their lust for power, wealth and violence by a need to appear democratic or liberal, the mask will be well and truly gone forever, and the full hideousness of their unveiled terror shall be unleashed like a roaring Tsunami of fire! The consequence will be our our exploitation, our pain, our destruction! Gangsterism will reign forever if we do not crush any opposition attempt to topple the Government!

  8. A.FRIEND is definetely one of President Nasheeds friends, good buddies, good mates, because he is tryin to preach about gangsterism and the oppossition, and about President
Nasheed being a saint, wake up and smell the shit all around you, the same goes to Khadeeja, you are being controlled by the propaganda, you are knee deep in it, because you are smelling roses, and yet we are all shovelling the shit, its painfully obvious and in plain sight yet people like A.FRIEND seems to only be a friend to MDP not the Maldives, can’t you see the right wing policies Nasheed is following, read about economic shock therapy and you will know what is yet to come!!!

  9. Dear Ahmed

I think if we can move from personalities to issues we will have a better chance of seeing what we are dealing with. Ahmed you seem to be still focussed on Anni this Anni that…. I don’t blame you, especially if you are not yet 30 years old or even 40 years, you have grown up in a culture of worship- the- ruler mentality. Perhaps you did not live away from Male’ long enough for you to have a shift in your mind set. Or maybe you are just too deep in the shit you speak of so eloquently.

I am not brainwashed by this government, Ahmed. I am wide awake and yes I can smell the roses and the frangipaani as well. I have as much right as you to create what I would like to see for my grandchildren. Yes Ahmed, I like what this government promises for an Anneh Dhivehiraajeh. And I would like to believe this government will deliver on what it has promised. Thus far Anni has delivered and is doing so. I am glad we have a democracy and separation of the three powers. I am glad I am able to write this and not fear punishment. I am glad we have opportunities to do business without begging for favours, to get medical care without begging, to see my father get free medical care and to get his monthly over 65 pension. I am glad we can travel to other islands without going bankrupt, to be allowed the opportunity to start a amall business without any assets to mortgage, to have access to loans to study without pawning our parents land and sell our soul. I could go on.

And yes there will be people in this government too who will through their addictions to greed power and control undermine what this government pledged to do. We can already see some of that happening . It is my hope that President Nasheed will act swiftly and decisively to deal with such people and structures, and ensure rot does not set in. It is also my hope that President Nasheed will set up structures to create safety nets and checks and balances to root out corruption sooner than later and reward those who act with integrity and service. If not then he would have failed in what he set out to do and we will find another leader who can deliver…… in the next election. That Ahmed, is the beauty of democracy.

So Ahmed, wake up. And smell the roses. The shit just diapperared down the toilet yesterday with Article 9 of the Bill on priviledges and benefits to Ex Presidents. We now have the opportunity to bring unity and integrity to our families our communities and our nation.

  10. Dear Khadheeja,

you are a brained washed puppet of Anni. There are lots of highly paid puppets of anni , he appointed after coming to power like the councellors, special advisors etc. We are very closely wacthing. Anni should know we are the real rullers of this country and we have the full power to change him.

    Regards

  12. I think anni is doing all that for all of uss. Not for him. I mean he is not a person who is looking for next 5 years or stay with in powers for ever. if he wants keep the salarys and and all up cheap goods and electricity he can still take commercial loans or sell another new islands and take 10 years advance rent. But hes paying back all the shit by previous goverment.

Hope you all will give him more time and cooperation to build this island nation for a better future…

    Thank you

  13. What I have seen for the last two years is a good government. A peoples government washed away from dictatorship.

Our President is doing what he can through the parliament. Most of his promises are held and refuge by the parliament, having majority by DRP & PA coalition. They are blocking every moves by the President. This is not something we the people of Maldives want.Opposition parties have to coorporate with the government. Otherwise the government will not run smoothly as we want.

Anyways. DRP is DRP and PA offcourse is PA. They will never come with the peoples side. They have their own hiden agendas. But surely they will not be able to come to power again. Never. You the supporters of them watch and see.
