President Mohamed Nasheed has met with Mrs Sonia Gandhi, President of the Indian National Congress party and Chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance. The meeting was held Friday morning at the Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi.
The President recalled his state visit to India last December as his first visit abroad after winning the first multiparty elections in the Maldives.
At the meeting, the President and Mrs Gandhi discussed the importance of having competitive political parties and local elections for a vibrant democracy. The President commended the role that Mr Rahul Gandhi was playing to make political parties more relevant in India.
Other topics discussed include climate change and new technologies to combat the effects of climate change. Reiterating his call on India on Thursday, the President said India could lead the world in a green technology revolution.
During the meeting, the President also highlighted the bilateral relations between India and the Maldives, saying they were ever progressing.
