Article Tools
A Japanese Judo master, Mr. Yutaka Kakinuma, has been invited to train defense tactics to the frontline officers of Maldives Police Service (MPS).
The Judo master who came to Maldives yesterday will stay in the country for a duration of 10 months and within that time will try to train as many officers as possible.
According to MPS, Kakinuma had also given training in this field to the Kenyan Police force for the last two years.
Commissioner of Police Ahmed Faseeh, speaking at the annual police meeting, said that police coming under physical attack by public was becoming common place and some people were spreading baseless stories about police brutality. Faseeh said that this has made the general public doubt about national duties that police has to carry out.
Since police became a civilian body in 2008, 18 police officers had endured various injuries in different occasions. Some of these police officers had to be sent abroad for medical treatment.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Mohamed Fayaz said that the police cannot turn violent like other people during confrontations. Fayaz said that since police has to be patient and handle difficult situations professionally it was important to train them in judo.
Judo originated in Japan and is a form of modern martial arts. It is a fun sport, an art, a discipline, a recreational or social activity, a fitness program, a means of self-defense or combat, and a way of life. It also develops self-discipline and respect for oneself and others. Judo can be learned by all age groups, both sexes, and even most disabled persons can participate together in learning and practicing it.
