No confidence motion against a cabinet member today – DRP

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

shareef300jDhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has said that they will be initiating a no confidence motion against a cabinet member in today People’s Majlis. But DRP has not revealed who this cabinet minister is going to be.

Special Envoy of DRP Ibrahim Shareef (popularly know as “Mavota”) said that he can say with 100 percent certainty that this is going to happen in the Majlis today and that DRP has decided to keep the identity of the cabinet minister still a secret.

In a DRP meeting held weeks back, DRP member Mohamed Hussein Shareef (Mundhu) said that Opposition alliance lead by DRP was working to initiate a no confidence motion against Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Ahmed Shaheed.

Speaking to Miadhu News last night, Dr Shaheed said that DRP initiating a no confidence motion against him will not surprise him. He said that the intelligent thing for DRP to do right now is not to play with government cabinet ministers but to replace the old DRP members and try to make DRP more efficient.

“DRP will not play with just one person; they will play with everyone. But they won’t dare vote against one certain person in their own party. It would be better if they try to improve DRP instead of hassling cabinet ministers. It would be better to initiate a no confidence motion against the aged people in their party. But the young members of DRP has no courage to do that.” said Dr Shaheed.

Foreign Minister said that DRP can certainly initiate a no confidence motion in the Majlis but that DRP has no right to do it. He said that the government has not done anything to stimulate such a move.

In their previous public meetings, DRP had said that they want to initiate a no confidence motion against Foreign Minister Dr Shaheed because Maldives decided to establish diplomatic relations with Israel and also military relations with India was also among some of the reasons that DRP mentioned.
