Maldives, Bangladesh to discuss issue of illegal laborers
Article Tools
A delegation from Bangladesh government will arrive in Maldives to day to discuss the issue of unauthorized
Bangladeshi laborers working in Maldives.
This delegation will be lead by Bangladeshi Minister of Labor and Employment Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain. In this five day visit, Minister Khandaker will meet President Mohamed Nasheed and Minister of Human Resource, Youth and Sports Hassan Latheef.
According to Bangladeshi sources there are more than 15,000 unauthorized Bangladeshi laborers working in Maldives. Besides the issue of illegal workers, discussion will also be held on the different problems Bangladeshi workers face in this country.
The Daily Star, a Bangladeshi news outlet, reports that the Minister Khandeker said that they learnt that Bangladeshi workers go to the Maldives as tourists but later they somehow manage to get jobs there and because of their illegal status many of them are exploited and subjected to abuses.
The issue of unauthorized Bangladeshis is not experienced by Maldives alone. For years India has been dealing with illegal Bangladeshi migrants and has yet found no concrete solutions to the problem.
