Jail should be built in uninhabited island
Article Tools
Seenu Maradhoo constituency member Hassan Adil has said that government should consider establishing a jail in an uninhabited island.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily about government’s decision to move Maafushi inmates to Addu, People’s Majlis member of Maradhoo said that government should maintain convicts in a way that does not affect the security of the general public.
Adil said that it would be dangerous to relocate inmates of Maafushi Jail to Addu as these inmates were responsible for breaking the walls and setting fire and causing innumerable damages to Maafushi jail. Adil also pointed out that government was talking about relocating them to Gan, where the international airport of Addu is located.
Addu Atoll Maradhoo member Adil said that this was not something Adduans would want and that Adduans were very concerned and worried about it. He called upon the government to change their decision of moving Maafushi inmates to Addu.
Government decided to more 200 of Maafushi inmates to Addu Atoll Gan following various damages caused to the jail by the inmates. The first strings of attacks to the jail came in March of this year where inmates fire on several places in the jail. The second and third round of attacks came this when inmates destroyed walls in several units and set fire to buildings on two successive days. It has been estimated by the Home Ministry that a total of MRF 200 million worth of damage has been done and the problem of space congestion in the jail forced the authorities to move inmates to a different location.
