Article Tools
Minister of Sports Hassan Latheef has said that the government is trying to arrange training for every team that is participating in South Asian Games (SAF) held this year in Bangladesh.
Minister Latheef said that even in previous years, when Maldives teams had practiced and trained days ahead they had brought a medal and so he hoped that Maldivian teams would succeed since arrangements are being made way in advance.
Government is now in talks with Olympic Committee to arrange for trainings abroad for every team that is participating in SAF games. In this respect, Table Tennis team to receive one month long training in China, Swimming team to receive training in Qatar, Volleyball team to get training in Indonesia, Badminton team to receive training in Sri Lanka and Athletics team to receive training in either Malaysia or Qatar and finally Basketball team to receive training in Malaysia and Thailand.
Minister said that the only team that will not be receiving any training is the shooting team and that they will be practicing in Kaafu Atoll Girifushi.
Minister Latheed further said that an estimated MRF 7-8 million will be spent to prepare teams for SAF games but government is not spending for it. He said this was made possible through private sponsorships and assistance from friendly nations.
