The current government’s policies were daunting women’s rights says the main political opposition, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP)
This was revealed at a press conference held yesterday by the president of women’s wing of DRP Ms Azima Shukoor. Azima said that in the past a lot of successful work had been undertaken to protect and promote women’s rights in the country. She added that now, women’s rights were going backwards.
She said that women’s position in the society and women’s rights was going backwards when a lot of work was done to promote women’s rights, and when a lot of developments were achieved in this direction in the past.
Giving her reasons for saying this, Azima said that since present government came to power, Ministry of Gender was terminated. Besides this, she said that working women faced a lot of problem because working hours of civil service employees was changed and also increasing the visa fees of foreign maids created problems for women. In addition to this she pointed out the termination of 210 women employees of women’s mosques in the country was not about 210 women, but 210 families who were associated with these women would be affected by this decision. Azima said that this showed that women were not included in the priority list of the government.
Also speaking at the press conference was Ungoofaaru constituency member of People’s Majlis Dr Afraasheem Ali. Dr Afraasheem said that he said that the government’s decision to terminate employees of women’s mosques was against the Shariah.
Vice President of DRP Dhunya Maumoon and former Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis Aneesa Ahmed also spoke at the press conference and criticized the government’s recent decision to terminate 210 women working in women’s prayer houses in the country.
