DAM shows some action on Climate Action Day

The 24 hour underwater activities which were organized by Divers Association of Maldives (DAM) ended at mid night last night. This was one of the most important events held in Maldives to mark International Day of Climate Change.
This event began at the strike of 1200 on Friday night with an under water protest in the lagoon in front of the President’s Office. This activity was inaugurated by the Vice President of Maldives Dr Mohamed Hassan Waheed. In various activities that were held by DAM, most of them were never done before in Maldives. To name just one, for the first time in the history of Maldives, an under water Bodu Beru program was organized and also chess and cards was also played under water.
Yesterday afternoon, along with divers, some of the cabinet and Majlis members participated in arranging themselves in the shape of 350 under water.
A number of non stop activities were organized by DAM, a high point if which was the music show held underwater where divers danced to the music.
Besides the activities organized by DAM, some important events were held across the country. Early morning yesterday, the cabinet hit the road on bicycles. This ride began in front of President’s Office and the rode all the way down Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu.
A prominent non profit environmental organization in Maldives, Ecocare, also organized a number of activities in association with Scouts Association of Maldives, Maldives Girl Guides Association, Renewable Energy Maldives, Strength of Society and Maldives Photographers Association. These activities included a rally from Male’ Youth Center to Lonuziyaaraikolhu, grounding 350 cars/vans and 350 motor bikes, cutting down electricity from all government premises completely to achieve a reduction of power consumption by 3.50MW, cutting down electricity from residential places except for their basic needs to achieve a reduction of power consumption by 3.50MW to name a few.
A very special event was held by a group of locals where by they made a life raft from more than 1200 empty PET water bottles. Six locals rowed the raft from Male’ to the International Airport Hulhule.
From the islands, in Hoadedhdhoo, Hoadedhdhoo Association for Development (HAD) organized some activities including facilitating the Maldivian Youth Civil Society Climate Change Conference that was held in a shallow lagoon in the island. During this conference youth civil society leaders throughout Gaaf Alif Gaaf Dhaal Atoll discussed, voted, and signed the Maldivian Youth Climate Change Declaration. This declaration, along with an accompanying short film of the activities on the 24th, will be presented to world leaders at the December 2009 UNFCCC Copenhagen Negotiation
International Day of Climate Action marked on October 24 was organized by 350.org to garner world attention to reduce carbon dioxide level in our atmosphere from 389 parts per million to 350 parts per mission. 350 is the amount that scientists consider as the safe upper limit to avoid damage to the environment.
350.org is an international, environmental organization, headed by author Bill McKibben, with the goal of cutting atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions to 80% by 2050.
