Child molestation cases reveled by MPS

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has yesterday revealed two separate cases of child abuse investigated this month by the police.

In one case, a man who was convicted with child molestation and was serving a banishment sentence for that crime in Meemu Mulaku , molested two under aged children in that island.

Speaking at a press briefing yesterday, Head Inspector of Family and Child Protection Unit of MPS Mirufath Faiz said that Hassan Ibrahim (39 years) of Noovil Haa Dhaal Neykurendhoo, was banished to Meemu Mulaku sometime before November 2007 for a similar crime and he was arrested by MPS on 4th of this month upon receiving reports that he had committed this crime while in Mulaku.

The usual sentence given to child molesters is banishment to some inhabited island but since November 2007 this has been stopped and after this date, child molesters are given a jail sentence.

Mirufath said that Hassan Ibrahim committed this crime when his sentence was near completion. She said that this case will be sent to Prosecutor General’s Office some time around next week when the investigation gets concluded.

In a second case, on October 11, MPS arrested a man on suspicion of sexually abusing six under-age boys in Noonu Manadhoo. The arrested man was Ahmed Hassan, 31, of Noonu Manadhoo Shabnamge.

In both cases, MPS said that there is a possibility of more victims and said they were investigating into the matter.

“I would like to implore to parents to protect their children from such people. It is very likely that children will fall prey to such people. Because when such people are convicted or in between investigation and conviction, they do not get enough counseling or treatment. It is a psychological disorder.” said Inspector Mirfath.
