Adduans not happy about transfer of convicts to Addu

Imaad Solih, an Adduan speaking on behalf of Addu Atoll residents has said that the decision of the government to move 200 inmates from Kaafu Maafushi jail to Addu has made the residents of the atoll very disappointed and upset.
Imad said this at a press conference organized yesterday by Hulhudhoo Fishermen’s Orhganization. Speaking at the press conference Imad said that residents of Addu were concerned as the government was talking about moving inmates who had caused much disturbance and damage to Maafushi jail. Imad added that it was some senior officials in the present government who had, along with residents of Addu, protested about former government’s proposal to build a jail in Addu.
“Just imagine what will happen if we let these felons who had set fire to Maafushi jail several times and had broken the walls of the jail, to live next to a population of 30,000 residents. The work to build a jail in Addu was brought to a halt when residents of Addu, along with present government’s officials protested about it.”
Imad said that condemned the betrayal on the part of the MDP ruled government which had once protested about a jail being built in Addu.
In addition to Imad, President of Hulhudhoo Fishermen’s Organization Mohamed Jameel also spoke against government’s decision to build a permanent Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) base in Addu Gan.

I guess this is now made a political fiasco by politicians. the government clearly stated this is a temporary transfer until a solution is reached. besides these convicts are from Addu and no other region in the country will approve to accommodate Addu convicts on their soils.
We all need to accept the lack of space and sufficient funding for building a world class jail. We have to face this social dilemma until we get a solution. In the meantime politicians should not mislead public as building a jail in addu has been ruled out.
