Abdul Raheem Abdul Majeed passes away

Renowned scholar and writer Abdul Raheem Abdul Majeed has passed away this morning at the age of 76. He died after a prolonged illness. Abdul Raheem started his public service in 1949 as an assistant private secretary of the first President of the country Mohamed Amin. He first studied in Madrasathul Saniyya but later he studied much from various top scholars of the country. He is a bi linguist fluent in Arabic, Urdu, English, Tamil apart from mother tongue Dhivehi.
Abdul Raheem was well educated in Islamic studies. He was a very good speaker, writer and a poet. He was also a teacher. Abdul Raheem was one of the best calligraphers in the country both Arabic and Dhivehi. He has written several books on various subjects. Thus he has won national awards for Arabic and Dhivehi calligraphy and Golden Pen for his outstanding services s a writer on the 50th anniversary of print media in the Maldives.
Abdul Raheem was a soft spoken amiable person loved and respected by his friends and public. He is known as failasoofi or philosopher among his friends.
Abdul Raheem was also admired for his frank and true ideals. Through out his life he spoke and stood for truth and reform and at times he bore the brunt for his criticism which was not welcome during those days. But he fearlessly spoke what he felt true on important national issues.
Late Mr. Abdul Raheem was survived by 11 children, y6 sons and 5 daughters. One of his sons, Abdul Gahfoor is a Phd who is a lecturer t Melbourne University. His Daughter Mariyam Azra is a Lecturer at the Maldives College. Other children are also working in different professions. A large number of well wishers and friends joined his janaza at New Cemetery this evening.
