4 MPs to join MDP
Article Tools
The ruling MDP which could not get a majority in the parliamentary election held in May this year will be getting 4 more MPs to their side soon. This was told by Nolhivaramu member of the Peoples Majlis Mohamed Nasheed, Colonel, during a speech he made at MDPs Haruge
yesterday. Nasheed, famously known as Colonel, who has been a very vocal and key member of MDP disclosed that Kaashidhoo member Ismail Abdul Hameed has already signed his application and joined MDP on Wednesday. Hameed who was first seen from the opposition DRP when it was in power, later joined Gasim Ibrahims Jumhoory Party, JP, but contested the parliamentary election as an independent. He was seen supporting the Government in the Majlis deliberations.
Earlier Kulhudhuffushi North member Abdul Ghafoor has said he will be supporting the MDP led Government in the Majlis indicating that he has also taken MDP side. Ghafoor, who was a senior body guard of the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was thought to be an ardent supporter of Gayooms DRP. But Ghafoor has said he has no such affiliation with his former boss, and he was only doing his duty. Ghafoor is representing north of one of the most populous islands in the north where there is a strong DRP base.
Vilufushee member Riyaz Rasheed has said at a meeting of the Majlis held in august that he will be supporting DRP government. He is however a member of Dr. Hassan Saeeds Gaumee Party.
MDP has not yet revealed the names of all four MPs who would be joining them, though it is now certain that Ismail Abdul Hameed has joined the ruling party.
Last week Foreign Minister Dr. Shaheed also joined MDP after leaving Gaumee Party of which he was a founding member and running mate of Dr. Hassan Saeed in the first multi-party presidential election held in October last year.Gaumee Party said they welcome Shaheeds decision and wish him well. Although Shaheed has left Gaumee Party, he has a good understanding with the party. In an interview given to Miadhu, yesterday, Shaheed has opined Gaumee Party will be the second biggest party in the country after MDP. According to our information there was huge support to Shaheed from MDP when he joined the party. Dr. Shaheed has been supporting and defending the Government very vocally at home and abroad, severely criticising former President Gayoom and his government. Shaheed was Foreign Minister and one of the closest confidantes of Gayoom from 2005 to 2007 when he resigned from Gayooms Government.
The parliamentary election of May gave a lead to the opposition DRP and its alliance partner PA with 35 members on their side while MDP had 28 members. There are 13 independent members, some them supporting the Government side and others taking the opposition side. The Majlis has there been largely dominated by the opposition making it extremely difficult for the Government to pass their bills and other matters.
However, with the current development of independent members joining MDP, and some others who, it is reliably learnt, will support the Government, key MDP officials are confident now that there will be more favourable responses to the proposals of the Government.
A very senior MDP official has said that 6 MPs would be joining them soon. The names of these members will be announced later, he said.

Dr. Shaheed has been working hard to help President Nasheed’s Government. Please have some appreciation for that fact and forgive him, those who do not still trust him, or at least give him a chance to show he will not betray again.
yeah shaheed was also working hard during gayyoom’s time to promote gayyoom. it is not about forgiving someone. it is about opening your eyes and understand how selfish politicians play their games so that we won’t be taken for a ride by them. shaheed is the worst i have seen so far. he keeps saying his selfish acts are for democracy. soon after he joined mdp government he wrote and gave quite a few interviews justifying his acts during gayyom’s rule. he claimed he was the mastermind behind all these reforms. if one read his writting or interviews, one would have thought that because of shaheed alone all of these reforms took place. he has a big mouth. he can’t keep his mouth shut even for a second. he said one thing one day, and another thing the very next day. because he talked too much he can’t keep track of what he said and ended up contradicting himself. the reader above said shaheed will not betray again. i doubt that very much. he will keep betraying everyone just to serve his own selfish needs. now he will keep telling us on how good nasheed is as a president and how well the country is under the mdp government. that was exactly what he did during gayyoom time. believe me, the moment he feels mdp’s rule is going to end, he will switch side again. even if qasim comes to power,(God forbids)he will be praising qasim and will start saying bad things about nasheed and his government. he will again say he stays in the government because that is the only way he can bring democracy to the country. are we to belive him again and kid ourselves that he will not betray anyone?
Its good more MPs are coming to MDP side. As time passes more will realise the falsehood and greed of DRP, and that there is nothing MPs and the country is going to benefit by supporting them. They have been rejected by the people because of their tyrany and high corruption. But this Government must also realise, they will face same fate if they pursue a policy of lies and unkindness.
MDP has to be a little careful about Dr. Shaheed, He called for the funeral of MDP when he was with DRP and soon he left DRP and started condemning Gayoom. He has now given the same example to DRP saying it is drowning. I hope he will not abandon MDP when it faces some difficult crisis. It is also surprising he has the same bonds with Hassan Saeed and his party.
The whole life of a person is a learning process and the evidance of learning is change in behaviour.Dr. Shaheed I think is a quick learner and has the capacity to think and act fast. Forgive me, I am not making a judgement on Dr Shaheed’s recent move. People still heavily condemn Dr. Hassan, Dr. jameel and Dr. Munawer for working for the former government. I think we should appreciate their aspirations and motive to seek opportunities to use their intelligence and expertise to contribute for the development of this country. It’s not everyone who has the capacity to think and make decisions at high level!

Ahmed, I did not say Dr. Shaheed will not betray, I said, give him a chance to prove he won’t, big difference…In other words, give him one last chance…i cannot predict whether he will betray or not, but I hope he does not and I will be hurt if he does betray…Not just myself but others who are really risking SO MUCH in putting their trust in him…
