It is not important to have a special register at Male’ Municipality and have second class citizens, President of Male’ Municipality Sarangu Adam Manik has said.
Male’ Municipality President made the statement in a special interview given to Miadhu Daily.
Adam Manik said that he has asked for Attorney General Advice on temporary suspending the special register. He said in other countries of the world, whereabouts of people, especially where people reside, is not maintained in a book called special register.
“The national identity would prove nationality of the person, next is voting in such elections and atoll and island council elections, people should in the constituency where they reside , after living in that constituency for pre – determined period, this is the best way and the most effective way for the country” he said.
He said believe a person who has his own house in Male’ but has lived in another atoll for over 10 years, would have his attention on Male’. He said such people would have his interests and focus on the atoll or the island where he resides and as such should vote in the constituency where he lives.
“I do not believe that a Male’ MP would be important to such a person, for such people, MPs of the constituency where he resides in would be more important” he said.
Municipality President said thousands of people are on the special register and that action regarding them will depend on advice from Attorney General.
Adam Manik further said the Special Register at Male’ Municipality was formed by the previous government with the only intention of increasing their support base and people in the hope of getting land for flats from Male’, Hulhumale’ and Vilingilli put their names on the register.

My own idea is to abolish that registery and re-start the previous regulations established by the govt. of former president Ibrahim Nasir. For those who want to reside in an island other than his island where he was born, must have his own house or flat, then he can apply to be registered in that island.
