A bill on evidence has been drafted and sent to the President’s office for submission to the People’s Majlis, Attorney General Husnu Suood has said.
Speaking at the press conference held at Fansavees Maalum / Dharubaruge to brief the media on the activities of his office, Attorney General Suood said some important bills that require Majlis approval, without delay, has been sent to the President’s Office this month and these bills included the bill on evidence.
Noting that bill on evidence has been long required by the judicial courts, Attorney General said lack of such a bill leads to unnecessary delays in completion of cases. The Attorney General also said with the new constitution, there was a need to reform the judicial process.
“In this regard, I would like to highlight, our judicial process, as it stands now, is based in confession statements extracted during the investigation stage, especially in criminal cases, a previous survey done in 2004, shows that almost 80 percent of the cases are concluded based on confession statements, however, this status quo cannot be maintained under the present constitution” AG Suood said.
As such, Attorney General revealed that the importance of bill on evidence has increased tremendously and other ways have to be introduced to prove the offenses committed in court.
He said the bill aims to introduce standards and guidelines on how forensic evidence and other evidences may be introduced and accepted by the court as well as guidelines on protection of witnesses.
Attorney General Suood further the bill on evidence would bring drastic changes to the way how cases are looked in to by courts and would facilitate serving of justice better.
