Deputy Attorney General Abdulla Muiz has reported that the bill on prevention of drugs includes forming a separate court called drug court to look in to cases related to drugs.
Responding to a question posed by Miadhu Daily, Deputy AG Muiz said the draft of the drug bill has been completed. He said he hoped to send the 17 chapter 112 article bill to the People’s Majlis next week.
He said in drafting the bill on drugs ideas and opinion of the general public was sought and several workshops were held to facilitate this.
Muiz said with the approval of the bill by Majlis, the important changes that will take place are forming drug courts, widening opportunity to seek and provide treatment, categorizing types of drugs used by various addicts and opening opportunity to form rehabilitation centers to private sector.
Muiz said with the endorsement of the bill by the Majlis, the way sentences are handed out in drug cases will also change. He said the present classification of a drug dealer, a person possessing one gram of narcotic drugs, will be change to more acceptable one. He highlighted that every body will accept the fact a person possessing a gram of drugs cannot be considered as a drug trafficker.
