Convict with 25 year jail sentence escapes from IGMH

A convict serving a 25 year jail sentence in Maafushi Jail has escaped while admitted at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) to receive medical care.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily an official from Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services said the escape was reported to them early Sunday morning and that the incident has been reported to Police. The official also said DRPS and Police were working on apprehending the escaped convict.

DPRS official said the Maafushi inmate, 38 years old, Mohamed Ibrahim Didi of Thurash / S. Feydhoo, was hospitalized to under go a surgery. DRPS official also said as inmate Mohamed Ibrahim had to be brought to frequently for medical treatment, he was transferred to Male’ prison on 1 April this year.

Further, in addition to the 25 year jail sentence, Mohamed Ibrahim also has to serve 15 other sentences; including a 12 year jail sentence on a drug related offense and 8 years and 6 months for robbery.

Maldives Police Services has denied the claims made by DPRS that they had informed the police on the escape. Police said no official report has been filed, however, as police were aware of the escape, work was underway to capture him.
