President Mohamed Nasheed has said that he will secure one billion dollar in foreign aid before the end of the year and straighten up the country’s ailing economy.
The President made the statement in his address given at a ceremony held at Kalaafaanu School on Tuesday night to inaugurate an MDP led survey aimed at seeking public opinion on the government’s cost cutting measures.
Speaking at the Kalaafaanu School, the President said peoples still talk about the 300 million dollars he mentioned during the 2008 presidential election campaign trail. The President said now the 300 million dollars is just an insignificant amount.
“During the 2008 presidential election campaign trail, we said we will secure 300 million dollars, God willing; but now I feel that amount is not much , God willing , before the end of the year , we will secure one billion dollars and straighten the country’s economy” president said.
President Nasheed said that he will ease the current economic difficulties in the next six months and straighten up the economy. The foreign donor agencies and financial institutions will open up to Maldives as never before due to refocusing and redirecting the government’s fiscal and economic policy, the President said.
In this regard, President Nasheed noted that Maldives will soon secure an IMF standby agreement which will open up tremendous aid opportunities. He also said Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide loans to support the budget.
“We are not out to play and make fun, I am fully aware of the difficulties, I know how much the people will hate me and oppose me because of these difficulties, I have not misunderstood this, we are people who have always done difficult things, today we are trying to change country’s fiscal and economic policies, just wait and see, God willing we shall accomplish it, we will change the country’s economy within the next six months” President Nasheed said.
In his address, President Nasheed he also assured that the difficulty in getting dollars from the banks will ease in the coming week.
“I am saying that God willing, next week we shall be able to solve the issue of the dollar shortage faced by the people” he said.
