Article Tools
State Trade Organization (STO) has commenced wholesaling onions, eggs and potatoes.
General Manager at STO Supermarket Ahmed Niyaz informed Miadhu Daily that yesterday various retail shops in Male’ were sold some two cases of eggs. He said the supply was for 2 days, a case per day, and that shop owners were asked to produce their trade license at the time of purchase.
He said over 600 cases were sold off before 1300 hours and that 800 cases would be sold today and 1000 cases would be sold tomorrow.
He also said households wishing to purchase eggs in cases would also be given the opportunity to do so soon. He said households wishing to purchase eggs in cases would have to produce the registry of the house or an equivalent document. For people living in rented out apartments, document showing they are living in rented out apartments will suffice, he said.
He said these measures were aimed at preventing certain people taking undue advantage at a time like this.
“Our objective is to provide goods at the cheapest possible price to people, so if some people were to buy the entire stock and to retail at expensive prices, then our objective will not be achieved, the people will not benefit, so are calling for the cooperation of everybody” Niyaz said.
With regard to sale of onions and potatoes, there are no restrictions imposed. “Onions and potatoes are being sold in the market for very good prices, so there is not much pressure on us, however, in the case of eggs, prices in the market is slightly higher, hence the pressure on us” he said.
