President proposes new names for Elections Commission
Article Tools
President Mohamed Nasheed has proposed three new nominees for the membership of Elections Commission to the People’s Majlis.
The three nominees are: (1) Sheikh Shuaib Yoosuf, (2) Mr Mohamed Farooq and (3) Mr Hassan Raeef.
The President Office said that those names were selected from the candidates who had expressed interest to work for the Commission as per the Article 4 (c) of the Law on Elections Commission.
Of the nominees, Sheikh Shuaib Yoosuf is currently serving as an Assistant Executive Director at the Office of the Elections Commission.
Despite the many nominations by the President to the Parliament to serve as members of the Commission, Parliament had only endorsed two of them, current member of the Commission, Mr. Fuad Thaufeeg and Mr. Ogaru Ibrahim Waheed.
Parliament had repeatedly voted against the nomination of the current President of the Commission, Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim and current member, Hassan Shah. Another nomination by the President and current Vice President of the Commission, Mr. Hussain Siraj’s nomination had also been voted against in the parliament.
