Friday, August 7th, 2009

Minister of Education Dr. Musthafa Luthfy has said Maldives Accreditation Board, MAB recognizes certificates for the various courses conducted by American College. Musthafa’s remarks came in the wake of some media reports about the certificates given for the courses conducted by the College.

When Miadhu contacted CEO of the American College Ms Sherryn Yaseen who was visiting Male’ with a delegation from the College, Ms Yaseen thanked the Minister of Education and other concerned officials for their support to reinstate the image of the American College of Higher Education which has gone through some hard times past two weeks due to some unfortunate statements published and aired in the media without proper verification from the College.

“It’s sad these statements were published without proper verification. We are grateful to the Ministry and authorities for their understanding" Yaseen said. “Once we explained to the Minister and MAB that the American College diplomas are accepted internationally in USA, UK Canada, Australia and many other countries towards immigration, work permits and university degrees, they understood these institutions who accept our diplomas are accredited by the Ministry of Education of those countries. This means our diplomas are on par with other internationally accepted diplomas. They can in no way be deemed as low standard."

Ms Yaseen further told most of the subjects offered for the diploma programs are subjects from the Broward College of USA curriculum. Broward College is USA’s 4th largest college having 105,000 students and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and schools. So students can transfer these subjects towards an American degree if they wish, she said.

American College situated in Dehiwella, Sri Lanka was established in 1995. It has 6000 students studying in the College, Large number of Maldivian students have studied from the College since inception.
