Senior MDP official found guilty of defamation

Civil Court yesterday ruled that Political Advisor to President Nasheed and former MP Hassan Afeef was guilty of defamation. The court also imposed a fine on Afeef amounting to Rf.4500.

Senior MDP official Afeef was sued by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom for alleging that he had embezzled US $ 80 million provided by Qatar government as tsunami assistance.

Commenting from Cairo, where he is attending an international conference, former President Gayoom said the ruling was triumph for justice, integrity and good governance in Maldives.

According to information received, Afeef would be appealing the verdict soon.
