Speaker calls on MP not to politicize Majlis affairs
Article Tools
Secretariat of the People’s Majlis , in a statement issued yesterday , has called on members of the Majlis to work in the best interests of the people without politicizing the work of the Majlis. The statement , issued in response to the urgent issue submitted by MP for Dhihdhoo region Ahmed Sameer, called on members to extend support the Speaker of the Majlis.
The statement went on to state that MP Sameer’s urgent issue on sexual abuse against children was rejected by the Speaker of the Majlis under Article 77 (E) of the Majlis Standing Orders and that this was duly announced at the Majlis sitting that day. Further, the statement stated that Sameer’s urgent issue was submitted under Article 75 (A) of the Majlis Standing Orders.
In response to the statement issued by Majlis Secretariat, Dhihdhoo region MP issued a statement condemning the speaker’s actions. Sameer’s statement stated that Majlis Speaker, having rejected his urgent issue on sexual abuse against children, was now spreading in accurate and bogus information regarding the matter.
“Majlis Secretariat, in a statement issued, today, has expressed bogus and inaccurate information over the urgent issue I submitted to the Majlis. The statement stated that the issue that submitted was proposed under Article 75 (A) of the Majlis Standing Orders and that chair did inform the sitting why the issue was rejected. However, the sad thing was that I had to take a point of order to clarify why my issue was not accepted, as the chair failed to provide the reason. Further, I am ashamed at the irresponsible manner in which this statement was issued; to say that the urgent issue raised by me was under Article 75 (A) of the Majlis Standing Orders clearly shows Majlis Secretariat’s irresponsibility. As mentioned before, the urgent case was submitted under Article 70 (A) and Article 74 (A) and (B) of Majlis Standing Orders” MP Sameer’s statement said.
Sameer’s statement further expressed regret and sadness by attempts of the Majlis Speaker to politicize issues of national concern. The statement also urged the Speaker to raise national interests over his party’s interests in issues that are of national concern.
