Number of student going to Pakistan on the decline – Ministry

Number of students pursuing religious studies in Pakistan is on the decline, human resources, youth and sports ministry have revealed.
According to the ministry most students nowadays prefer to take up studies in countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Yemen.

The ministry said despite the recent arrests of some 11 armed Maldivians in Pakistan the government’s policy on sending students to Pakistan has not changed.

The government now sends students to Pakistan to under go studies in specialized fields like medicine or Sharia and Law and only to universities or colleagues approved Maldives Accreditation Board.

Ministry also said it is not aware and nor have it received information that any of the registered students studying Pakistan are involved in terrorist activities.

In recent months Pakistan government has shut down several madrasas propagating Islamic fundamentalism.
Islamic affairs minister Dr. Abdul Majeed Bari said Maldivians students initially started going to Pakistan for religious studies as Maldives then did not have any center teaching religious studies and also to obtain a first degree to qualify for universities in Saudi Arabia.
