Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

At the seventh sitting of the 17th People’s Majlis held yesterday, members elected the 11 standing committees of the Majlis.

Some seven members took the floor to discuss election of members to the Majlis standing committees. In this regard, MP for Baa Kendhoo region Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, Deputy Leader of the main opposition DRP, proposed to elect members to the 11 Majlis standing committees, as proposed in the report submitted by the 7 member adhoc committee tasked with nominating members for the committees. When the motion was put to vote, the motion was endorsed by 70 out of 72 members in attendance voting in favor.

Before the motion was put to vote, Majlis considered the report submitted by the 7 member adhoc committee. The report was presented by chairperson of the committee MP for Lhaviyani Hinnavaru region Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. In presenting the report, MP Solih noted the support and cooperation extended by political parties. He also said the expeditious manner in which the committee was able to complete its work was chiefly due to this show of cooperation.

Speaking at the Majlis sitting yesterday, independent member MP for Faresmaathoda Ibrahim Muthalib said although the 11 committees includes Independent MPs, the Majlis is dominated by the will and wishes of the political parties.

MPs from political parties responded to Muthalib’s remarks. In this regard, MP for Mulaku region and President of People’s Alliance Abdulla Yamin said the selection of members to the Majlis standing committees were handled very well and that considering the percentage of independent members , their representation in the committees were adequate. He also said even though the selection process hotly debated among political parties, the discussion was conducted without any ‘personal spirit’.

MP for Vilufushi region Riyaz Rasheed speaking on the issue said “I believe that MDP and DRP have a big role to play in the Majlis and as such committees will have a high number of MPs from these parties, the constitution stipulates that all political parties in the Majlis should be accommodated in these committees. However, the constitution is silent on Independent members”.

Generally, the Majlis sitting yesterday went on in a very friendly atmosphere with no hostilities usually seen in Majlis sittings.
