Child sex offenses not prevented because it was concealed earlier says President
Article Tools
Sexual abuse of children in Maldives has been going for ages and that the reason why it has continued to the present day is because previous governments chose to conceal it, President Nasheed has said.
He made the statement speaking at Artificial Beach after taking part in the peaceful march held yesterday evening against sexual abuse of children. The march was organized by several NGO’s working in Maldives.
President Nasheed said people today feel that sexual abuse against children are committed more frequently than before , only because the government do not conceal such acts any more. He also said such abuses will be talked more frequently in the future not because such acts are going to increase but because it will be revealed and not concealed any more.
He said he does not believe child sex offenses were not prevented due to lack of laws or regulations. He said many of the existent laws and regulations are sufficient.
The march was participated by senior government officials and members of the parliament. Many MPs both from MDP and DRP spoke at Artificial Beach against child sex offenses. They called on the parliament not to politicize the bill submitted to parliament on child sex offenses but rather consider it as a national concern.
