HRCM to take action against public company

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has submitted is seeking a court order from Civil Court which would empower the commission to take action against a public limited company for not complying with a Commission order.

HRCM in a statement issued on Thursday said under articles 36 and 26 of the Commission’s Act, all persons and entities within the jurisdiction of the Maldives are obligated to follow orders issued by the Commission to protect and preserve fundamental rights and freedoms afforded under the Constitution, Islamic Shariah, and the international human rights instruments that the Maldives is party to.

The case was submitted to Civil Court on 19 May 2009, and the Court is expected to announce a date for the first hearing soon, HRCM said.
