HRCM congratulates President on receiving 2009 Anna Lindh Award

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

The President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) Ahmed Saleem, has congratulated President Mohamed Nasheed on receiving the ‘Anna Lindh’ prize for 2009, a human rights award created in the name of the late Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh.

In a letter sent on Friday, the HRCM President said that he believed that this prize has been awarded to President Nasheed not only for his efforts to include human rights in his campaign to fight climate change but also for his role in the democratization process in Maldives.

This prize, he said would serve as an encouragement for the President to create a culture that respects human rights and democracy. Great efforts are still needed to sustain what has been achieved during a relatively short time since the ratification of the constitution in August last year, he said. He further expressed hope that the President would remain steadfast in his commitment to uphold democracy and human rights in the country.
