Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that even though he is no longer in President Nasheed’s cabinet his efforts to strengthen the country’s democracy will continue without unaffected.
President Nasheed dismised Civil Aviation and Communication Minister Dr Jameel on Saturday and appointed the state minister for civil aviation and communication Mahmoud Razee as minister’s replacement.
In a press release on the president’s website today, the president thanked Jameel for his services and expressed confidence the people and the government of the Maldives would continue to receive Jameel’s services in different areas.
In a statement issued on Saturday evening, Jameel said that he joined the government at the president’s request following the success of Wathan Edey Gotah Alliance.
“During the 6 months I spent in President Nasheed’s cabinet, I was honest to the my vows to respect and uphold the tenets of Islam; to protect the country’s constitution and rights of the people and to be sincere to the country; I worked to strengthen democracy and gave priority to protect the best interests of the people” Jameel‘s statement read.
Jameel , in statement said that he had worked to make the People’s Majlis , a place free from government influence, during the parliamentary campaign trail , in order to complete the presidential system of governance stipulated in the constitution. He further stated that he would continue working on strengthening the aspects of presidential system of governance and do what ever is required to familiarize the people with this system.
Jameel, a founder member of Gaumee Party, said that during the time he spent in the MDP led coalition, he has said what ‘just words’ and that he will remain a person who at all times speak ‘just’ words.
“My hope is that President Nasheed will be a President who fulfill his pledges ,practice what he preaches and establish democratic good governance in the country” Jameel , who served the former President Gayoom as Justice minister said.
Jameel, is the third member of the cabinet to leave the cabinet in less than seven months since the coalition government took office in November 2008. During the parliamentary campaign trails, Jameel was publicly critical of the government, criticizing the government of disregarding the constitution and the appointment of atolls and island councilors. Jameel alleged they were abusing their powers and exerting undue influence on the electorate.
President Nasheed, just weeks ago, dismissed Attorney General Dhiyana Saeed following the publication of a series of letters critical of Nasheed’s government. In the Dhiyana alleged that political appointees abused their powers with specific intent to influence the parliamentary elections held on 9 May. She also criticized the president for his failure to appoint a permanent home minister following Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim’s resignation. She further published a copy of her appeal to Supreme Court to rule on whether the creation of seven provinces and seven corresponding councils, part of the government’s decentralization process, was unconstitutional.
Jumhoory Party Leader Gasim resigned in December last year, less than a month after President assumed office. Gaumee Party Leader Hassan Saeed, resigned as Special Adivisor to President, citing the President’s failure to follow his advice just 3 months after the government was formed.
