DRP to propose Shahid as Majlis Speaker

PA Deputy Leader Nazim as Deputy Speaker

The main opposition, Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP), which won highest number of seats in the recently held parliamentary election, has decided to submit names of Abdulla Shaid, who won Vaavu Felidhoo constituency seat and Ahmed Nazim, deputy leader of People’s Alliance (PA) who won Meemu Dhihgaru constituency seat, for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of People ‘s Majlis respectively.

The decision was made during a meeting of the party’s parliamentary group held on Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking to media on Wednesday night, DRP Spokesperson Mohamed Saleeem said the names were endorsed unanimously by the party‘s parliamentary group and that name of PA deputy leader Nazim was proposed as PA was DRP’s ally and that both parties have formed a coalition.

Saleem revealed that the parliamentary group endorsed deputy leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, who was elected to the Baa Kendhoo seat, as the President of the parliamentary group.

Spokesperson Saleem further revealed that DRP leader and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom also participated in the parliamentary group meeting held on Wednesday afternoon.

Abdulla Shaid nominated by DRP for the Majlis Speaker position is the sitting MP for Vaavu atoll while Nazim nominated for Deputy Speaker position is MP for Meemu atoll.

In the recently concluded parliamentary elections, DRP/PA coalition won 35 seats. DRP won 28 seats and PA 7 seats. A total of 39 seats are required to secure a majority voting bloc in the parliament.
