Maldivians who go abroad for the purpose of jihad are religious extremists, President of Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) Ahmed Saleem has said.
Speaking at a news conference held on Tuesday, Saleem said of late various religious organizations under different names have sprung up in Maldives and that there is a confusion of religious principles. Some of these organizations have links to foreign religious groups and are supporting their activities.
Commission member Ahmed Abdul Kareem said the sad state of affairs is directly due to failure of government to take proper action. He said in the past government had failed to give adequate attention to such issues and that of late commission had been notified certain groups perform separately in mosques and refuse to join the Imam. He said talks on the issue were held with Islamic Affairs ministry and expressed hope that Islamic Affairs ministry would give more attention to such matters.
He further said in Islam, jihad is carried out for a very noble purpose and it cannot be done just for the sake of doing it. He made the remarks referring to the Maldivian who recently who blew himself up aboard as an act of jihad. Furthermore, before his departure from Maldives, he had advised to send his two children for jihad when they reach age of 10, Commission member Kareem said.
HRCM President Saleem said these religious extremists have extraordinary spirit and would not hesitate to perform jihad against those who oppose them. He said these acts would have a negative impact on our future generations and called on Islamic ministry for appropriate action.
