Maldives to attend Children’s Climate Forum, Copenhagen 2009
Article Tools
In December 2009, several thousand delegates will attend the Fifteenth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC – COP15) in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The City of Copenhagen and The Danish National Committee for UNICEF are organizing a Children’s Climate Forum prior to the commencement of the UNFCCC. This will be a five day event, held at the Copenhagen Town Hall, during the first week of December. The organizers of the event have invited a children’s delegation to represent the Maldives at the CCFC-09.
UNICEF Maldives, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Housing, Transport and Environment as well as some environmental non-governmental organisations have begun a process to select 4 candidates, constituting 2 girls and 2 boys, who will make up the Maldives Children’s Delegation.
The delegates will be selected through an application process, which requires eligible candidates to be between the ages of 14 – 17 years old and actively involved in an environment club, group or association. The competition is open to children of this age group both in and out of school from across the country. All children who fulfill the above eligibility criteria are invited to apply for this wonderful opportunity to represent the Maldives in this important event.
The Maldives is one of the lowest lying and most vulnerable countries in the world to the negative effects of global climate change, such as sea-level rise. Therefore, climate change is a key environmental issue to the country. Combating the effects of climate change is a major concern in which our children, who will be the leaders and decision makers of tomorrow, must take part and play a significant role. Therefore, the Children’s Climate Forum is an opportunity for young Maldivians to present the environmental issues faced by their country to a global children’s audience. The forum will be a platform for the children to exchange information and engage in a learning process to understand how climate change affects children from various countries around the world. In conjunction with the climate forum, an online platform will be created offering opportunities for the children to network and keep in touch with their counterparts across the world.
Application forms for the above selection process will be available from schools and can be downloaded from the website of the Ministry of Education, at www.moe.gov.mv.
The deadline for applications is 7th May 2009. A public event is planned for the selection of the final four delegates which will take place on the 11th of June. Further details about the event will be confirmed at a later date.
