Majlis to proceed with decentralisation bill

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Draft legislation for devolving decision-making powers from central government to local councils was sent to committee at today’s sitting of parliament.

In a narrow vote largely along party lines, following days of contentious debate, 20 MPs out of 39 in attendance – the bare minimum needed – voted in favour of sending the bill to committee for further review.

After the vote, speaker Mohamed Shihab urged members of the committee to complete their work within two weeks if the bill was to be passed by the current parliament.

Male’ MP Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra), the only MP who abstained in the vote, doubted whether a committee could address the “deep, many and large matters” with the sitting parliament reaching the end of its tenure.
