Elections announces candidate numbers

The Elections Commission of the Maldives had announced the candidate numbers for the candidates contesting in the parliamentary elections to be held on 9 May 2009. The announcement was made in an event held in Elections headquarters at 1015 hrs.
When the deadline to file the candidature had come to an end 472 candidates had forwarded their candidacies. However, the Elections Commission decided that 465 of them meet the criteria stipulated in the Constitution. The approved candidates include 211 candidates out of 213 candidacies filed from the political parties and 245 independent candidates out of candidates 259 candidacies filed independently. The Elections Commission had said that 7 of the registered candidates had failed to meet the criteria. However seven more candidates had withdrawn their names. Hence, the total number of candidates standing in the election is 458.
Elections Commission had also highlighted that 11 of the 13 registered parties had fielded candidates. Candidates’ representing political parties includes 76 by MDP, 56 by Dhivei Rayyithunge Party, 4 by Adhaalathu, 5 by Islamic Democratic Party, 2 by Social Liberal Party, 2 by Maldives National Congress, 18 by Peoples Alliance, 17 by Republic Party, 6 by National Alliance Party, 1 by Fageerukan Naththaalaa Party and 21 by Dhivehi Gaumee Party.
