Divers welcome ban on shark fishing

Divers had been congratulating a decision by the Maldives to ban shark fishing from 12 miles from the reef edges.
Mr. John Mac, a senior officer of the Divernet said in his blog that it is a step taken to protect the species.
If the Maldives wants to remain as a major tourism destination and if the Maldives wishes to maintain its beauty, these actions should be forthcoming, he says.
Divernet has ranked Maldives as the second best destination among divers in 2008. Mr. Ahmed Shiaan, First Secretary of the Maldives High Commission in London received the award in a function held in Hotel Novotel London Excel.
Despite receiving the first prize in 2007, Maldives slipped second in 2008. Egypt was the first and Malta became the third.
