Nationwide ban on shark fishing imposed

Friday, March 6th, 2009

A nationwide ban on shark fishing has been imposed by government, Dr. Ibrahim Didi, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture has revealed.

The ban will come into effect in a year’s time, Dr. Didi said, so as to give an opportunity for those making a living off shark fishing to find alternatives.
Shark fishing has now been banned within 12 miles of the coast. Dr Hussein Rasheed, state-minister of fisheries, had spoken about the shark fishing ban at a fisheries intervention in Italy organized by the U.N food organization FAO.

Shark fishing was banned because of adverse affects to the tourism and fisheries industries, the two main sectors of the economy. Further, surveys by the minister show sharks could become extinct in Maldivian waters if fishing is allowed to continue.
