Agreements amounting to US6 million in aid for various sectors were signed during the President’s official visit to Italy from the 16 to 22 of this month, Dr. Shaheed, minister of foreign affairs said, adding such visits by the President were important.
The foreign minister made the statement in response to a question from a journalist on the matter of the visit’s 6 million rufiyaa price tag during a time of financial difficulties.
Having the President lead the delegation paved the way for securing aid and achieving the visit’s other objectives. No other official could have made the same impact. Being a political prisoner contributed to President Nasheed’s popularity abroad, Dr. Shaheed said.
Although the current trip secured US6 million from Italy, the trip will result in several million dollars more. Going over the achievements of the trip, Dr. Shaheed mentioned inclusion of representatives of various sectors facilitates the swift results.
He made special mention of Nasheed’s achievements at the Milan Fair.
