President Nasheed meets with Admiral Mehta

India’s Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Suresh Mehta has paid a courtesy call on the President. The call was held this morning at the President’s Office.
The admiral and the President discussed the historic close friendly relations existing between the Maldives and India, and ways to enhance these relations in the years ahead and ways of strengthening shared national concerns in the areas of maritime security. They also discussed Indian participation in the country’s economic development.
The admiral said that it was a great pleasure to have had the opportunity to meet with the President and congratulated him for having won the first multi-party elections held in the Maldives.
At the meeting the President noted the importance of security for the development of the Maldives and stressed said the assistance of the Indian Navy in this regard was much appreciated. The admiral assured the Indian Navy would continue to work together to ensure enhanced maritime safety and security in the region.
Speaking to the press, after the meeting, President Nasheed said he had requested the Admiral to send, in the week ahead, about 30 doctors to work in the Maldives.
The admiral briefed the media on the discussions he held with the President and said he would work to process the President’s request.
The President and Admiral Mehta also signed the Admiral Chart of Maldives prepared by the Indian Navy.
