Special envoy to the president Ibrahim Zaki has said the delegation of Indian businessmen currently visiting the Maldives is among the prominent businessmen in India. He also stated the C.I.I., who co-ordinates big businesses in India and who oversaw the current delegations’ visit, was instrumental in the work to usher in democracy to the Maldives by the former opposition party, MDP.
He made the statement at a press conference at the President’s Office, following the ceremony held on the occasion of the signing of 15 MOUs between the Maldives and Indian businesses.
Zaki questioned why, despite the intimate relations between the two countries, Indian companies had not embarked on such beneficial projects previously. He went on to say that was because the relationship between the two countries at the time was appropriate for one between the world’s largest democracy and the world’s greatest dictatorship. Things have changed, Zaki said, because the Maldives has now become a full-fledged democracy and has been accepted by India as a democratic family member.
He expressed full confidence of even bigger projects being carried out in the future, ones that Maldivians can quickly benefit from. Referring to the recent MOUs, Zaki said such things are not the result of correspondence or talks but the result of the great trust vested in the current administration by the Indian businesses and government, because of the manner in which the Maldivian government treats Indian citizens, business and government. He said what was witnessed that day was the result of improved relations between the countries.
