National fund for mosques opens on 26th

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

The ceremony to mark the establishment of the national fund for mosques will be held on the 26th of this month, at the Islamic Centre, Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Baaree, minister of Islamic affairs has said.

The fund was being established to repair and construct 100 or so mosques across the country. It is expected to bring in much needed contributions from the private sector and facilitate the construction and maintenance of mosques, Baaree said. The fund would also create opportunities for interested parties to participate in the endeavor.

Some island communities had been calling for new mosques to be constructed and were resentful in delays. They had stopped praying in their mosques saying they were built atop burial plots and were facing difficulties in conducting prayer.

Interested parties may share their expertise as well as providing material contributions to the fund, Dr. Baaree had said previously.

The fund is the first of its kind to be established in the country. Miadhu Daily had been informed that there were numerous parties interested in contributing to the fund, provided arrangements had been made for such parties to participate in the endeavor in an official capacity.
