Maldives signs MoU engages with Italian Govt

Maldives government on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding on strengthening cooperation on 4 major areas, with Italian Government. The MoU was signed during President Nasheed’s meeting with the officials of Italy’s Chamber of Commerce Industry.
Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Rasheed signed the MoU on behalf of the government of Maldives while, Under Secretary of State Dr Adolfo Urso signed the MoU on behalf of the government of Italy.
The 4 areas of cooperation stated in the MoU are tourism promotion; health care; trade and investment; and public utilities.
President Nasheed also met with the President of Italy’s Parliament, Dr Gianfranco Fini. At the meeting, the President informed Dr Fini on the government’s efforts to consolidate a modern liberal democracy in the Maldives.
He also met with senior officials of Italy’s Confederation of Small and Medium Business. At the meeting, the President and the members of his delegation informed the participants on the investment opportunities in the Maldives.
Further, he met with Italy’s Tourism Promotion Board and discussed ways of alleviating possible negative impacts of the global economic crisis on tourism industry of Maldives.
As part of his ongoing visit to Italy, President Nasheed and his delegation on Wednesday met with Dr Esterino Montino, Vice President of Lazio Region and Health Minister Dr Mauro Mancini.
The regional government leadership thanked the President Nasheed for his visit and expressed their hope that the link between their region and the Maldives would extend beyond tourism and go into areas such as healthcare and public hygiene which the region has particular expertise in.
During the meeting the President noted that more than 10 percent of Italian tourist arrivals were from the Lazio region and thanked them for the assistance they were giving in treating children with thalasemia. He said that he looked forward to seeking their assistance in other areas, particularly infrastructure development.
At the meeting a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to develop greater cooperation between the two parties and to arrange for a technical team to visit the Maldives within the next ninety days and see what economic, social and cultural areas the Lazio Regional Agencies could engage in. The Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Rasheed signed the MoU on behalf of the Government of Maldives and Vice President Dr. Esterino Montino signed on behalf of the Lazio regional government.
