Maldives has strong Islamic character rich culture – President

President Nasheed has said the Maldives has a strong Islamic character with a rich culture and a long history. The President made this statement while speaking at the function held to inaugurate the mosque building and renovation fund, as well as the Fiqh Academy. The function was held on Thursday morning at the Islamic Centre.

President Nasheed conveyed his sincere greeting and good wishes to the people on the occasion of the National Day. Noting that the National Day had many associations with the construction of mosques in the Maldives, the President said the Boduthakurufaanu mosque was first built on this day.
Focusing on privatization process initiated by the government, the President expressed his confidence that this would increase the participation of private parties in the construction of mosques in the Maldives. Further, he said that basic services to the people could only be provided through public private partnership. He also thanked the Ministry of Islamic Affairs for opening the mosque building and renovation Fund.

President stressed the importance of inaugurating the Fiqh Academy and said religious deliberations had been going on in the Maldives for many years.

Minster of State of Islamic Affairs, Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed; President of the Maldives National Chamber of Commerce, Ibrahim Jihad and Vice President of the Figh Academy Fayyaz Ali also spoke at the meeting. The vote of thanks was delivered by the Vice President of Maldives National Chamber of Commerce Ismail Asif, and Latheefa Gasim delivered the introductory remarks.

At the function, Minister of State for Islamic Affairs, Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed presented to President Nasheed, a plaque symbolizing the inauguration of the mosque building and renovation Fund. The President also inaugurated the official website of the Fiqh Academy. He visited the Library of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and inaugurated its e-library.
