IGMH on halt, Doctors on sick leave
Article Tools
The biggest hospital in Maldives, Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) is at a standstill as the doctors, with the exception of one, did not report to work. Out of 25 Maldivian doctors on duty roster only Dr. Shaan reported to work.
According to reliable information received most of nurses are on sick leave as well.
IGMH Deputy Director Abdul Sattar, speaking to Miadhu Daily, informed that as nearly all the doctors on today’s duty roster are on sick leave, the services of some the departments are at a complete halt. He said foreign doctors on the hospital’s pay role are being called in, in an effort to solve the crisis. He noted that some of doctors have even reported sick for tomorrow as well.
Abdul Sattar said the hospital had no prior indication of today’s crisis. Doctors kept reporting sick two by two, numbers just kept increasing, he said.
According to information received from some doctors who reported sick today, they took sick leave in protest of the denial of some of their rights by the recent changes to the government administrative structure.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, doctors insist that, even in simple things like ‘the administration of doctors’, their wishes and sentiments are not respect showing the level of appreciation the management had for their work.
If the doctors keep reporting sick, it is unlikely the crisis could be solved n the near future.
