Govt. signs MoU with University of Milano-Bicocca

The Government of Maldives has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Milano- Bicocca on setting up an outpost of the University in Magoodhoo of Faafu atoll. The MoU was signed during President Nasheed’s visit to the University on Friday. Under the terms of the agreement, trainers from the University will visit the Maldives and carry out programs in the marine sciences.
The MoU was signed on behalf of the government of Maldives by the Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr Ibrahim Didi, and on behalf of the University, Rector Marcello Fontanesi.
Speaking to the media after the signing ceremony, President Nasheed highlighted the importance of opening a centre of the university in the Maldives, before adding that such a centre would contribute to the country’s efforts in mitigating the effects of global warming and climate change.
Further University of Milano, also appointed President Nasheed as an honorary student of the University.
Before this event, President Nasheed had met with several tour operators of Italy, at the University. In the meeting, the President briefed the tour operators on government’s ongoing efforts to improve the country’s tourism industry. The President revealed the government’s desire to open tourism for midmarket and introduce luxury villas in the Maldives.
President Nasheed further said the Maldives was open for Italian direct investments. He underscored the priority areas for investment included electricity, water, sewerage and other basic utilities services. He also added the government encouraged and would facilitate potential investors in the Maldives.
Speaking further, President Nasheed said his government was committed to curb corruption and adopt transparent policies.
The tour operators expressed their continued interest to work for the Maldives. They noted that the Maldives is an exotic destination for Italians and highlighted the importance of developing a sustainable tourism industry. They also acknowledged the investment potential of the country.
President Nasheed also attended a Maldivian Evening in Milan. The President and Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dr Ahmed Ali Sawad addressed the audience.
