Prominent politician and newly established political party Gaumee Party’s Leader Dr. Hassan Saeed has tendered his resignation as Adviser to President Mohamed Nasheed. The former Attorney General Dr. Hassan Saeed who resigned from former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s cabinet blaming Gayoom’s government and his reform program as a failure, has said he was resigning from President Nasheed’s Government because appropriate atmosphere and system is not available for him to offer his advice to the President. ”I have done my best to win the election for the President in the second round. I have also done my best to make President Naseed’s Government a success. I have given my sincere advice to him on several matters without any remuneration" Dar Hassan has written in his letter to the President.
The young lawyer politician further wrote in the letter “Appropriate arrangements have not been made for me to provide my advice as Your Excellency’s Adviser. As a result, there are increasing occasions where I have to give advice on issues where decisions have been made contrary to my advice. These decisions have implications on the national interest and relate to major economic, social, constitutional and legal matters. Because of this Your Excellency and I have to face various difficulties. In view of these reasons, I have with effect from today tendered my resignation from the post of Your Excellency’s Adviser"
Dr. Hassan has appeared in the Maldivian political landscape during the past five years with his reform ideals and became a popular politician which led him to run in the first multi-party Presidential election in October 2008. Hassan came third in the first round of the election, and then he joined with the President’s MDP Alliance with whose support President Nasheed won the second round of the historic presidential election on 28 October.
Jumhoory Party and its partners of former Finance Minister and billionaire Gasim Ibrahim also joined the MDP Alliance after Gasim lost the first round. President Nasheed appointed Gasim to the powerful post of Home Minister, but in just 16 days after the appointment, Gasim resigned from the post saying MDP and Government officials are obstructing his constitutional duty as minister. Gasim also blamed President Nasheed has not been true to the conditions of the Alliance which brought Nasheed to power ending President Gayoom’s 30 year rule.
Dr. Hassan Saeed’s alliance with MDP Government also has gained two prominent posts in the Government. They are Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed and Communication Minister Dr. Mohamed Jameel. Foreign Minister Dr. Shaheed is presently accompanying President Nasheed in his official visit to Italy. There is no news how these two Ministers would react to their leader’s decision. Both these Ministers resigned from former President Gayoom’s Government with Dr. Hassan Saeed to start their new political partnership which has now become the country’s newest political party the Gaumee Party. Gaumee Party is fielding 20 candidates in the Parliamentary elections to be held in May this year.
