FM meets UN Secretary General

Foreign minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed has called on the United Nations Secretary General Banki moon on Monday and delivered a letter from the President Mohamed Nasheed, according to foreign ministry statement.

Ministry revealed that Minister Shaheed thanked the Secretary-General for the support extended to the Maldives in achieving a transition to democracy. He also expressed appreciation for the cooperation and valuable assistance rendered by the United Nations system over the past decades towards the development of Maldives.

Minister Shaheed highlighting the developmental priorities of the new government briefed the Secretary-General on the development challenges and the severe constraints facing the Maldives due to the global economic downturn and the imminent graduation from the list of Least Developed Countries.

According to foreign ministry the Secretary General congratulated Maldives for the historic democratic elections and assured the Minister of the United Nations’ support to the democratic process of the Maldives and the initiatives taken to address the vulnerability of small island countries and their acute development challenges.

During the visit to the United Nations, foreign minister also held bilateral meetings with countries on the threshold of graduation from LDCs and transition countries. In this regard, he held discussions with the Permanent Representatives of Cape Verde and Samoa and with the Finance Minister of Tuvalu.

In addition to the above meetings, Minister also met with the Permanent Representative of Albania to the United Nations and exchanged views on ways of further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and on international issues of common concern, foreign ministry revealed.
