President calls for innovative thinking for fishing industry

President Mohamed Nasheed has called on the relevant government authorities and all stakeholders in the fishing industry to embark upon innovative thinking for the industry. President Nasheed made the statement in his message on the occasion of this year’s Fishermen’s Day, which was marked across the country on Wednesday.
In his message, President Nasheed said that the profits of the bountiful seas that surrounded the country must directly accrue to the fishermen.
He also said the country needed to find ways to enable the fishermen to spread over the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone, to ensure the availability of catch in all seasons.
President Nasheed’s message further stated that the Maldivian fishermen, acquired with the understanding of marine life cycles, should be able to exploit modern technologies in fishing. He said, by advancing in the skills and knowledge in fisheries, the Maldives could become internationally prominent for fisheries.
Commenting on the role of the Government, the President said that the Government should facilitate opening up, and expanding the opportunities of, the fisheries industry.
President Nasheed , in the message, pledged that his administration would bring all necessary changes to the Government to achieve these goals. He said the Government would work to remove the existing barriers in the way of Maldivian fishermen in integrating with the world fishing industry.
The message went on to say that the goals of the Government included making the Maldives’ fish the number one brand available on the world market, and increasing the prosperity of the people by enhancing the price of fish.
The President, in his message, also added that the people stood to gain immediate benefits from every sincere policy of the Government. In this regard, he drew attention to the reducing of fuel prices in response to the fall in global fuel prices.
President Nasheed noted that at present the price of diesel stood at about one Rufiyaa per liter for subsidized fishermen.
In his message, President also expressed sincere greetings and good wishes to all Maldivian fishermen, fish entrepreneurs, and all involved in the fishing industry, on the occasion of Fishermen’s Day.
