New Maldives team quits MDP Alliance
Article Tools
The New Maldives team led by Presidential Candidate Dr. Hassan Saeed has quit the MDP led Alliance due to differences over the forming of President elect Mohamed Nasheed (Anni)’s cabinet, according to close associate of the new Maldives Team.
According to the close associate of New Maldives Team, although former Attorney General and Presidential candidate Dr. Hassan Saeed endorsed Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) in the second round of presidential elections unconditionally he later agreed to join the Alliance government at the request of Nasheed.
The close associate of New Maldives Team, who was a key member of the Hassan’s campaign speaking to Miadhu Daily said Hassan agreed to join President elect Nasheed’s government with 3 cabinet positions, but that the committee formed by MDP Alliance to set up cabinet after several discussions decided on giving Dr. Hassan’s team 2 cabinet positions. According to close associate although Hassan agreed on accepting 2 positions, his decision to quit the Alliance was when the committee later reduced the 2 promised cabinet positions to one.
“It does not make sense to give same number of cabinet seats to the party which came third in the elections and to the party which achieved lowest number of votes, it is unacceptable, that is why Hassan has decided to stay away from Nasheed’s government, there is no other problem” said the friend of New Maldives Team.
A former cabinet minister commenting on the current political spectrum said that President elect Mohamed Nasheed received full support in deciding his cabinet and that apart of obtaining the approval of the People’s Majlis, no other approval is required. He said pressuring Nasheed on the matter is sad state of affairs. He further said President elect Nasheed has the full support and backing of the people and unless he uses his constitutionally granted powers to establish the government the people will not begin witness the developments and reforms promised.
