Gayoom father of modern Maldives – Dr. Manmohan Singh

The Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is the Father of Modern Maldives and one of Asia’s greatest statesmen and leaders. The Indian Prime Minister made the statement while speaking with President Gayoom over the telephone yesterday morning, according to president’s office.
Dr. Singh said that he was happy that the presidential election in the Maldives went in a smooth and peaceful manner. Further, he noted the successful undertaking of President Gayoom to bring a modern liberal democracy to the Maldives. Also Dr. Manmohan Singh invited President Gayoom and family to make a visit to India in the near future.
President Gayoom expressed delight that the Prime Minister had called, and thanked the Prime Minister for his efforts to strengthen the relations between the Maldives and India.
